HolePatch is developing a cheaper, faster, and sustainable replacement to the cold patch method used by governments for patching potholes in the winter.
The HolePatch team consists of five students from Case Western Reserve University. The team won first place in both the St. Gobain Design Competition and IdeaLabs.
The Heureka Intelligence Platform (HIP) provides a unified framework that enables organizations to identify information and gather intelligence from their digital endpoints on a global scale, in real time. HIP allows organizations to discover & analyze data in-place for strategic, surgical incident and event response.
HIP can be used on premise or as a SaaS and incorporates an endpoint service application that builds local, full text content and metadata indices of all file system objects, perpetually. From a central Command Console, operators are able to remotely interrogate all endpoints and identify specific unstructured or semi-structured documents or file system artifacts by user-selected criteria such as filename, content keyword, date ranges, hash value, application or file type, Boolean statements, fuzzy logic, pattern matching, proximity or wildcard to analyze information across an entire enterprise. From the Command Console, operators leverage use-case specific workflow applications to identify, analyze, classify, tag, collect or move items on an as-needed basis, across the globe, in minutes.
We were founded in 2012 to create a more efficient and cost effective way to identify data on endpoint computers to be used in litigation. Once we started demoing our alpha version to customers, they told us to forget about evidence for lawsuits as our technology would be more useful finding malware or identifying data that posed risks for organization like those that contained social security or credit card numbers.
By June of 2014 we pivoted and renamed ourselves Heureka Software and began rebuilding our original vision.

Hedgemon is a Cleveland-based startup developing a hedgehog-inspired, shock absorbing liner.
The comapny was founded in February 2015 and is developing a platform shock absorbing liner inspired by hedgehogs. Wild hedgehogs are agile climbers, scaling trees to heights exceeding 30 feet while foraging insects. When a hedgehog needs to descend from an above ground perch quickly–to escape an owl, for example–it will curl into a spikey ball and simply drop to the ground. Upon high speed impact, the hedgehog scurries away uninjured because the quills projecting from its pelt absorb shock.
Hedgemon’s patent-pending liner, which consists of elongate polymer elements projecting in various directions from a base material, emulates two key principles of the hedgehog model. The first is the overlapping layout of flexing quills, which enables adjacent quills to ‘domino’ into each other, facilitating omnidirectional energy dissipation. The second is the internal architecture of the quills, which facilitates elastic bowing under load, and therefore, multi-shock durability.
The initial target application for Hedgemon’s technology is an integral safety liner for football helmets to reduce risk of concussion. Other potential applications include but are not limited to body armor; running shoe soles; infant car seats; protective packaging for fine art; transport cases for sensitive equipment; vibration damping bases for airdrop pallets; fall protection flooring for nursing homes and daycare facilities; and furniture cushions.
Groupmatics's platform helps group clients attending sporting events and entertainment venues the ability to sell and manage their group tickets while collecting valuable attendee data for the team/venue. It handles all the work involved in the selling process, alleviating group clients from the hassle of collecting payments, tracking sales and distributing seats. The company's ability to capture all attendee data resolves a glaring problem for all sports franchises and entertainment venues.
The company received a $25,000 Innovation Fund A award in September 2013 and a $100,000 B award in August 2015.

GLIDE works with companies in all stages of their business development. Some of the companies we work with have become GLIDE portfolio companies by forming an alliance with GLIDE to foster local job growth, innovation, and economic development. These companies are given access to GLIDE mentors and staff members who act as a board of advisors for the companies as they access capital and enter in their products into the market. In return, GLIDE Portfolio Companies agree to retain their headquarters in Ohio and commit to providing GLIDE with updates on their progress.
UroSense™ urine management system provides real-time awareness to caregivers enabling them to mitigate health and safety issues associated with catheterized patients while realizing substantial cost savings. The product provides fill level and core body temperature data directly to a monitor or nursing station wirelessly.
Full Circle Technologies has developed a patented chemical mechanical process to devulcanize old tires, turning them back into sticky, elastic rubber which is then made into a free flowing pellet. The end product, called Ecorphalt, is used as a polymer modifier in asphalt roads to make it last longer, more durable and create a smoother surface.
Fontus Blue has a cloud-based decision software that helps water treatment plants optimize their use of treatment chemicals and processes, resulting in exceptional water quality with reduced operating costs.
Today, treatment plant operators don’t have a way to quickly and reliably tell how changing the amount of one chemical will affect the need for other chemicals. So they often use more treatment chemicals than necessary. Decision Blue® is a patent-pending software using real-world data collected at water treatment plants, unique measures developed at the University of Akron, and advanced multi-component optimization mathematics to quickly evaluate millions of possible combinations of treatment chemical dosage levels and search for cost-effective solutions. The company already has customers in six states and Canada using its platform
Fontus Blue is housed in the Akron Global Business Accelerator (Akron, OH).

Folio Photonics is developing an optical data storage disc with two Terabyte capacity manufactured using a highly scalable, low-cost method. Data storage is a nearly $30 billion market utilizing primarily magnetic storage technologies such as hard drive disks (HDD) and magnetic tapes (MT), which are costly, power-intensive, and short-lived. Optical data storage, on the other hand, is known as an inexpensive, energy-friendly, long-term storage solution. However, progress in optical disc storage capacity has limited its market share.
Folio Photonics’ technology is based on a multi-layer disc produced by polymer co-extrusion, a manufacturing method used primarily for food packaging. This manufacturing method produces data storage films with dozens to thousands of layers with almost no marginal cost per layer. These films can then be cut and laminated to disc substrates for a highly competitive manufacturing cost that provides the opportunity for large margins in comparison with HDD and MT. The use of fluorescence-based physical-multilayer disc architecture allows the use of inexpensive read/write hardware.
Folio Photonics is a start-up company spun-off from the Center for Layered Polymeric Systems, a National Science Foundation funded Science and Technology Center.
