HolePatch

HolePatch is developing a cheaper, faster, and sustainable replacement to the cold patch method used by governments for patching potholes in the winter.

The HolePatch team consists of five students from Case Western Reserve University. The team won first place in both the St. Gobain Design Competition and IdeaLabs.

Aspiring Entrepreneurs go to Boot Camp

Starting a business is a little like preparing for battle. Planning a strategy, financing and then selling it to the people. That is where a business boot camp comes in.

Blackstone LaunchPad is a partnership between the Blackstone Charitable Foundation in New York and the Burton D. Morgan Foundation in Hudson. Each provided $1.6 million to fund programs at Kent, Baldwin Wallace University, Lorain County Community College and Case Western Reserve University.

March 21, 2012: The Innovation Fund, founded by the Lorain County Community College Foundation, is awarding $400,000 to seven technology startup companies in its latest funding round. The round included four $25,000 awards and three $100,000 awards.

Campus Shift ($25,000, Akron)
Campus Shift's website and cell phone applications connect students with their campuses, helping them search and save on textbooks and stay informed of campus events. It also allows local businesses to network with students to keep them updated on events and discounts in their communities.

CellBank Technologies ($25,000, Beachwood)
CellBank Technologies will collect and then store bone marrow and stem cells from the one million patients who have knee and hip replacement surgeries each year. CellBank customers will then be able to use their own tissues for their own (autologous) bone grafting surgeries and for future approved stem cell therapies.

Quixby ($25,000, Akron)
Quixby simplifies the computer building process, providing guidance and instant compatibility and current pricing (including rebates, discounts, and shipping) comparisons. These features drastically reduce time, save the user money, and provide a worry-free buying experience.

ScoreFeeder ($25,000, Hudson)
ScoreFeeder is a sports media content provider that feeds digital high school sports data to the media and others. It is a web-based communications device between high schools, coaches, the media, fans, and family.

TIP Imaging ($100,000, Shaker Heights)
TIP Imaging has developed ConvergeCT, a revolutionary image quality (IQ)-based dose management system that removes the guesswork for the CT technologist. This unique product eliminates unnecessary variation due to the complexity of scanner setup, variability in scanner models and patient differences, yielding improved clinical outcomes.

via680 has developed Ving, a web-messaging tool that combines the best of the internet into one multi-media digital package allowing senders to engage recipients and receive real-time feedback.

Zuga Medical ($100,000, Beachwood)
Zuga Medical systems has greatly simplified dental implants and opened to the general dentistry market a novel procedure that will finally allow dentists to replace outdated bridges with clinically superior tooth restorations.

"The number of qualified new business ideas each quarter gets better and better and this last selection cycle they were exceptional," said Cliff Reynolds, co-director of GLIDE. "Fortunately the Innovation Fund committee provided us with extra funds beyond our budget this quarter to support additional companies."

Including this first quarter 2012 cycle of awards, the Innovation Fund has made 97 awards to 80 companies totaling $5.675 million since its 2007 inception. These companies have attracted more than $62 million in follow-on investments, created nearly 170 new jobs, and provided over 150 student internships.

May 17, 2012: The Innovation Fund, founded by the Lorain County Community College Foundation, is awarding $375,000 to six technology startup companies spread across five Northeast Ohio counties. The funding round, which is comprised of three $25,000 awards and three $100,000 awards, includes the first award winners from Lake and Stark counties. Other counties represented are Lorain, Cuyahoga, and Portage.

IGW Finance Alternative ($25,000, Elyria)
IGW Finance Alternative's web-based process allows retail stores to retain potentially lost credit sales through an alternative financing solution with extremely high returns.

QURA Scientific ($25,000, Parma Heights)
QURA is developing a reagent kit product for the medical research and human diagnostic markets that allows for faster and more sensitive determination of the amount of protein or other small molecules in a biological sample compared to current available methods.

Paragon Robotics ($25,000, Hiram)
Paragon Robotics designs and manufactures building energy management products that improve energy efficiency by using a unique control system. Its initial product line will include heating, cooling, and lighting controls for commercial buildings.

Tesla NanoCoatings ($100,000, Massillon)
Tesla NanoCoatings provides corrosion control coatings with fullerene carbon nanotube cathodic protection of metal to the aerospace/military, petrochemical, transportation, marine, and industrial markets.

In2une ($100,000, Shaker Heights)
In2une's social marketing platform is designed to sell the maximum number of live music event tickets, as well as high-margin on-night food, libation and merchandise in venue and the surrounding concert neighborhood.

Future Path Medical ($100,000, Concord)
Future Path Medical has developed a wireless sensor-based system that provides caregivers with real time data of urine output flow and core body temperature.

"The Innovation Fund has always been a regional fund for technology-based startups throughout the 21 counties of Northeast Ohio," says Dennis Cocco, co-director of GLIDE, the Edison Technology Incubator that administers the fund. "We are continuously working with our partners to reach companies throughout the region, making sure they're aware of the Innovation Fund and the opportunity it presents. We're pleased that this cycle included the first funded companies from Lake and Stark counties."

With this award cycle, the Innovation Fund has made 99 awards to 84 companies totaling $5.75 million.

GLIDE hands out grants to seven businesses

The Innovation Fund, founded by the Lorain County Community College Foundation, awarded $400,000 to seven technology startup companies in its latest funding round.

ScoreFeeder LLC of Hudson has received a $25,000 award from The Innovation Fund. The Innovation Fund, founded by Lorain County Community Foundation, awards early-stage capital to technology-based companies in Northeast Ohio so that they can validate their technologies and business concepts.

The Lorain County Community College Innovation Fund awarded grants totaling $375,000 to six Northeast Ohio technology startups.

The Innovation Fund, founded by Lorain County Community College, has awarded $375,000 to six technology startup companies across Northeast Ohio, including one in Massillon. Tesla NanoCoatings has received $100,000 in funding from the foundation.
